Your Instagram username is your digital identity — it appears in your profile URL, in mentions, and in search results. A great username is memorable, easy to spell, and immediately communicates who you are or what you do. Keep it under 15 characters if possible and avoid strings of random numbers.
Instagram usernames must be between 1 and 30 characters. Only lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), periods (.), and underscores (_) are allowed. Usernames are case-insensitive, so @MyBrand and @mybrand are identical. You cannot start or end with a period, and consecutive periods are not allowed.
If your ideal username is taken, try adding a relevant prefix (the., hey., its.) or suffix (.co, .hq, .official). For personal brands, your full name or a shortened version works best. For businesses, use your brand name plus a descriptor if needed. Avoid underscores between every word — they make handles harder to remember and type.
Go to your profile → Edit Profile → Username. Type your new username and Instagram will instantly tell you if it's available. Keep in mind that your old username becomes immediately available for others to claim, so have your new username ready before making the switch.
